Monday, April 8
Classwork
  1. Do Now: Quiz #26: ate, ary/ery/ory, ant, cian, cule/ling, cy, dom
  2. During: Read "There Will Come Soft Rains" by Ray Bradbury (p. 284) Alternate Section 3 Quiz Question: Defend or refute Bradbury's view of the future in the story.  Is it realistic or not?
  3. After: Check-out copies of Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut and collect Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Homework
  • Begin reading Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five
  • While you read: keep an index card in the beginning of the book listing important events and characters
  • Research Paper Draft 3 is due today, but will be accepted without penalty until 1:30 pm on Wednesday (hard copy only)

  1. Do Now: Read the "Writing" exercise at the top of p. 399.  In your journal, make three columns.  At the top of each column write the name of an object.  Below each one, write at least 5 details that vividly describe the object.  At the bottom of the column, give the object a name that 'hints' at what it symbolizes or link it to an event (something that it would symbolize).
  2. After: Edison eValuate Test 
  3. Then: Check your score to see how much you've improved.  Title a new page of your journal "Edison Test Review."  Write whether or not you've improved throughout the year, how much/little, and what you will need to focus on to continue that improvement.
Homework
  • Use the character card you created for Fahrenheit 451 to help guide the creation of a new one for one of the objects you described in class.  After creating the card, write a short story that uses the object in a symbolic way. 
    • The story may be hand-written or typed, includes a heading like the research paper and should be titled 'Object Short Story.'  It is due next Wednesday/Thursday in class. 
  • Bring Slaughterhouse Five to class on Thursday

  2. Then: Introduce Literary Foils
  3. After: Groups identify Foils for Montag in Fahrenheit 451
  4. Journal: Read The Fifties handout and write about how you believe Bradbury's book is relevant to the military buildup that is happening today in the same region of the world.
  5. Reminder: Draft 3 of the Research Paper is due by Monday, April 8 (No other drafts are required, but a 4th will be offered as an optional enrichment activity)

  • 'Create a copy' in Google Drive of the new Draft 3, make revisions to the research paper, Print and turn-in by Monday, April 8.
  • Continue Book of the Month activity (Performance activities are due Thursday, April 4.  All others are due Friday, April 5 by 2:15.)

  1. Do Now: Journal to address the question, "Why is characterization/character development important in a story?"
  2. Then: Discuss Bradbury's comparison of Montag to the mythical Icarus (read the myth here)

  5. Journal: How could you use foils to enhance a character in a story of your own?  How do they develop that character both directly and indirectly?
